I am a physical oceanographer studying the global-scale ocean circulation and its role in regulating the climate system. In particular, my research focuses on (I) the exchange rate of tracers between the surface and ocean interior, and (II) the dynamics of the interior waters, which constitute the largest reservoirs of heat and carbon. My work connects ocean dynamics at a range of spatial and temporal scales, e.g. small-scale (turbulent) mixing and its implications for the large (basin) scale circulation.
I employ a combination of tools, with an emphasis on in-situ observations (ship-based or via autonomous vehicles) and data-driven methods (such as data assimilation, inverse methods, and machine learning) for integrating observations into a spatiotemporally coherent framework
